Volume 4 of the concert recordings „Springtime in Vienna“ is exclusively dedicated to Johann Strauß. His works are performed by an outstanding cast: the conductor Erich Leinsdorf (1912 – 1993) native Austrian, but spending most of his life in the United States, returned to his home country for this recording and took over the guidance of the cast. Standing by his side are famous soloists: soprano Helen Donath who originally came from America and made a big opera career in Europe and the German tenor Werner Hollweg – an established participant of the „Springtime in Vienna“ concert series.

This concert from the Roman Theatre in Merida, Spain, recorded in 1991, shows Placido Domingo at his best. He not only sings some of his favourite arias but also conducts the orchestra for Mstislav Rostropovich’s performance of a Haydn Cello concerto, plays piano and joins soprano Olga Borodina in an excellent performance of a duet from Bizet’s “Carmen”.
